First Bull Run

A Fire & Fury scenario from the Great Eastern Battles book. In fact, the first field battle of the war. Many civilians came out from nearby Washington to watch the fun, only to panic and cause mayhem when the Union army started retreating. The scenario starts with the Union having a big advantage, but things slowly swing to the Confederates so long as they can delay the Union attack without taking too many casualties. This is a longish scenario which we played out over successive weeks. A very tight game, which ended in a winning draw for the Confederates (they held the Henry House hill thanks to a spirited counter attack at the end, but had taken too many losses). The pictures were taken at the end of the first session to enable the table to be set up again, and show the battle from all four side of the table.

View from behind the Union lines, looking east towards Henry House hill, which the Union has occupied in strength. The Rebel counterattack is just starting, led by the white-shirted Georgians.

The Henry House has been temporarily reloacted at the foot of the hill so that it doesn't get in the way of the action.

Here we see the view from behind the Henry House hill. Rebel reinforcements are moving up in the foreground. To the right of the hill Jackson stands like a stone wall (he didn't distinguish himself in our refight).

View from behind Bull Run, with the Stone Bridge in the foreground, and Jackson's brigade in reinforced line just beyond. To the right of Jackson, Bartow has just seen off Sherman's attack.

And finally, the view from behind Sherman's men on the Union left. They have just been repulsed by Bartow. Burnside's brigade (to their right) was supposed to join in the attack but rolled a series of 1s and 2s on its maneuver dice and managed to avoid taking part in the battle.
